Attorney General Troy King is running for re-election on the Republican ticket but sources tell the Parlor he is working with prominent Democrats in order to win over challenger Luther Strange in Tuesday’s primary.
According to 10-day financial disclosure forms filed May 25 (two days before deadline) with the Secretary of State, King’s campaign had a cool $11,548 remaining on May 20 after raising $366,485 but spending $745,055 since mid-April. King also loaned his campaign $100,000 on May 17. Ouch, right? Well, I don’t think an incumbent’s campaign which has so far spent $1.7 million this cycle goes down that easy.
Danny reports that many Montgomery insiders are telling the Parlor that Phillip Kinney — formerly of Joe Perkins’ Democratic public relations powerhouse, Matrix, LLC, which is working on Ron Sparks‘ campaign for governor* — is now working with Jere Beasley for King’s campaign. While many Montgomery insiders are telling the Parlor this, no folks definitively in the know are confirming it. If Kinney and Beasley are doing work for the King campaign, then their effort is in addition to what is done by King’s regular campaign team.
What we do know is that Kinney left Matrix recently to hang his own shingle. According to records from the Secretary of State’s office, Kinney registered Kinney & Associates (a law practice) and Kinney Capitol (to perform “any lawful activity”) on May 18. These businesses share the street address of three PACs Kinney set up on May 21: Tallapoosa Street PAC, Riverfront PAC and Premium PAC.
Strange’s campaign has these photos which purport to show King and an aide meeting with Kinney within the past couple weeks.
With the primary election Tuesday, if all of the above means anything we’ll know very soon whether King has brought on new people to get him through to the general election. This could get very interesting, maybe even today.
